Hook Taps MusicInfra to Power Rights and Royalties for Social Music

Remixes, mashups, and fan-crafted content are one of music’s next frontiers as more and more fans turn into creators. Though creators on social media love to reimagine their favorite artists’ songs, the process of ensuring all rightsholders are accurately credited and paid out presents unique administrative challenges.

Music rights management company MusicInfra was built for this challenge and is now working with Hook, the social music platform where artists and their communities co-create, discover, and experience music together, per the permissions set by the rightsholders. MusicInfra will manage Hook’s licensed rights and royalty administration as Hook expands to include more features and offerings for users. Hook’s innovative, interactive format mixes audio and visual media and demands an equally innovative and deeply knowledgeable partner to ensure rightsholders are paid quickly and accurately.

Hook allows music fans to remix music and create their own vertical videos to share with others on the Hook-app and on other platforms such as TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram and Soundcloud. As a music experience that blurs the line between creating and listening, Hook represents one version of music’s future. “Music is increasingly interactive. Fans don’t just press play; they play with music,” reflects MusicInfra co-founder and CEO Bjӧrn Lindvall. “As they do, their activity opens up a new challenge for rights management, as well as new revenue streams for artists and songwriters.”

MusicInfra’s industry-leading tech untangles the complexity of licensing and rightsholder payments. Built for the interactive and data-intensive future, MusicInfra offers accurate multi-rightsholder clearance across composition and master rights, publisher-level clearance visibility across territories, and DDEX-compliant reporting, as well as a real-time dashboard that allows Hook and its rights holders to view catalog details, usage and earned royalties on an ongoing basis. MusicInfra will also manage payments to rightsholders on behalf of Hook, while tracking license management and recoupment using its innovative, configurable deal engine.

“Music is becoming social, where people don’t just listen, they want to participate in and express themselves through the music they love, yet it’s been hard for ordinary music fans to get into it and virtually impossible for music platforms to convince rightsholders to license for it,” explains Gaurav Sharma, founder and CEO of Hook. “Hook has unlocked these rights and as we grow, we need a reliable yet agile rights administration and licensing backend to implement our innovative deals with rightsholders. MusicInfra have proven they know how to navigate new uses and complex licensing scenarios.”

“The music industry’s infrastructure needs to evolve, or innovation and growth can’t happen,” notes Lindvall. “MusicInfra is built to handle large-scale, existing platforms and services, but also to support groundbreaking models in interactive music, gaming, and other areas. Hook is a great example of this kind of innovation, and we’re excited to support it.”
